NEWSLETTER SEPT 2010

Diana Henderson prepares the Church Newsletter and would like for all the Committees to place information about your committee in the Newsletter.  It can be times you meet, things that you want to share, special dates, etc…I need to have your information by the last Thursday of  each month.  You can e-mail me at diana5637@yahoo.com, call me at 380-4670, or put the information in Diana’s mail slot.

3rd Annual Luther Rose Bazaar
*Just a reminder to get those fingers moving making crafts for our craft table.
*Check those cookbooks for yummy treat recipes for the Bake Sale Table.
*Check the Helping Hands board for ‘roses’ with donation items needed to help keep our costs in check, and our profits high! Just pick one (or more – a whole bouquet is fine!) and return the item with the rose attached so we know it is for the bazaar. Donations can be placed inside the church office and we will store until needed.
Thanks in advance for making this a fun and profitable day!

Alexandria Parade
St. Luke will be participating in the Alexandria parade the first of September.  Please consider lending a hand to decorate the ‘float’, and participate on that evening by representing the church.  We also have some ‘hands’ dedicated to that endeavor on the Helping Hands board.  Please take one and help us make this a success.

Council Update Information
Just a quick update to let everyone know that Pastor Zimmerman has agreed to be the interim pastor of St Luke for the next year.  He will officially start with the council meeting on Tuesday Sept. 14th, with the 19th being his first service.  He will be joining us for worship on the 12th as well, so please introduce yourself and make him feel welcome.
Pastor Zimmerman is from Alexandria, and has many years of experience. We look forward to working with him to keep St Luke moving forward in mission.

Special Offering for Pr. Anne
On Sunday Sept. 19th, we will be having a special offering to help toward paying Pastor Anne's previous business expenses.  You should receive a memo in the mail shortly.  We ask that everyone please prayerfully consider a donation to help get this debt paid.  If you will not be attending that week, you may give your donation to any member of council.
Thanks!  Dana Bradley

Social Ministry IHN
St Luke is a support church to Asbury Methodist and the next weekly rotation starts September 5th – September 12.  St Luke's day is Thursday September 16th through breakfast and van delivery to the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) center Friday morning.  We do not know the number of individuals in this rotation yet but there generally is around 10 children and/or parents.  Still in need of evening hosts and overnight hosts (need two), see Anna or Lee if you can help.  IHN has a successful record of helping homeless families get jobs, homes and direction that changes their lives.  Think of the good you could do by giving of your time to this worthwhile project.

Bread of Life Food Pantry
In August the pantry served 351 Campbell County residents by providing food, personal care items and household necessities. St Luke as a co-sponsor of the pantry provides volunteers and donations to assist in the success of the pantry.  Thanks to all those that have volunteered during this very hot summer by giving of their time, effort and energy to work at the un-air conditioned pantry.  With God's help the "government box room" also known as the "hole" or "dungeon" was provided an air conditioner.  What a wonderful change, see Louie Thompson for details.

Because of limited resources the "selection room" starting in September is REDUCING the allowable choices by 30%.  Donations are needed.  Money works best though any donation of food, personal care or cleaning products is welcomed. If you are a member of a club or association please encourage that group to pick the Bread of Life as a project for a food or personal care drive.  It will make a difference to those in need.

Campbell County Resource Center
Thanks to all that donated for the back to school supplies drive.  On September 1st our donations were delivered to the Center and were much appreciated because all available supplies had already been rationed to those in need.  Our donation of hundreds of items is posted on the fellowship bulletin board.

Again, THANKS TO ALL who support St Luke's Social Ministry goals. We are limited in what we can do, but if you or someone you know needs help let us know and we will see what we can get done.

Tuesday Breakfast
If you are in the area and would like to chat amongst friends: please join your friends of St. Luke at Frisch’s in Cold Spring every Tuesday morning at 9 AM.  See you there.

Walk to Emmaus
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant
of all."

The next Men's Walk is Sept 16th - 19th and the Women's Walk is Oct 21st -24th.  We would be honored to sponsor anyone who is interested in attending these walks.  If you would like more info on the Emmaus Walk, please see:
Todd or Cindy Weiner, Mitch or Lisa Talbott, Roy or Peggy Whitford, Carole or Rick Kaiser, Leslie Bell, Lorie Scott, Lou Kaspar, Mary Eicher.

We continue to collect County Market receipts and turn them in.  We receive $20.00 for every $1,000.00 worth of receipts.

Think ahead and buy gift cards for purchases from local merchants.  (See list in fellowship hall).  Some of the ways these can be used are:  groceries (also, don't forget to use your Kroger cards), paying bills (Kohls lets you use these to pay your bill), special occasion gifts, restaurants where you eat anyway, and any number of creative ways.  Give your order to Hank Nienaber and he will order the cards for you.  What could be easier? And it creates money for our church as well.

Matt. 18:4-5
“Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.”

Johnny’s mother looked out the window and noticed him “playing church” with their cat.

He had the cat sitting quietly and he was preaching to it.  She smiled and went about her work.  A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing and ran back to the open window to see Johnny baptizing the cat in a tub of water.

She called out,  “Johnny, stop that!  The cat is afraid of water!”

Johnny looked up at her and said, “He should have thought about that before he joined my church.”

Landscaping Group
It seems to me that we are experiencing some contention with the weather this year.  Need I explain?

Louie Thompson continues to cut the grass & has been in the process of clearing more tree stumps.  What a blessing for the job he does each week on our yard.

Lou Burke, Roy Whitford and myself have each shared in watering, weeding & deadheading areas at various times.  It can be hot, exhausting work but the gratification lies in our labors.

My wish is with cooler weather approaching, we can accomplish landscaping around the cross on the hill & the lattice work for the trash cans.  If you are interested or have ideas/thoughts, please see me.

A few hours on a Saturday morning with several volunteers can reap many rewards.  To that end, be on the watch for an announcement of a Saturday workday.
